ALFIE CONN SRwho died on 7 January, 2009, aged 82, was a Scottish footballer who represented Heart of Midlothian during the 1940s and '50s.Along with Willie Bauld and Jimmy Wardhaugh, the inside forward was part of the 'Terrible Trio' strike force that fired the club to success in the Scottish League Cup of 1955 and the Scottish Cup of 1956.Born in Prestonpans, east of Edinburgh, on 2 October 1926, Alfred Conn moved from Inveresk Athletic to Hearts at the age of 17. Over the course of 14 years he would score more than 200 goals in 408 appearances with the club.The most important of these was the crucial third Hearts goal against Celtic in the 1956 Scottish Cup Final, securing the trophy with a 3-1 win.He was also part of the League Championship-winning side of 1957/58, though injury kept him out for most of the season.The following year he moved to Raith Rovers where he played for two seasons before going into non-league management.He represented the Scottish national side once - in 1956.His son, Alfie Conn Jr, played for Rangers, Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur and also had a spell at Tynecastle.In 1998 Alfie Sr was quoted as saying, "When you have been a Hearts player the feeling never leaves you."Scottish international and successful manager Dave Mackay was among those to pay tribute to him saying: "Alfie was a legendary figure at Hearts. His record speaks for itself and the names of Conn, Bauld, Wardhaugh will forever be engrained in the club's history. His passing is yet more sad news after the recent deaths of John Cumming and George Miller."
