ALFIE CONN SRwho died on 7 January, 2009, aged 82, was a Scottish footballer who represented Heart of Midlothian during the 1940s and '50s.Along with Willie Bauld and Jimmy Wardhaugh, the inside forward was part of the 'Terrible Trio' strike force that fired the club to success in the Scottish League Cup of 1955 and the Scottish Cup of 1956.Born in Prestonpans, east of Edinburgh, on 2 October 1926, Alfred Conn moved from Inveresk Athletic to Hearts at the age of 17. Over the course of 14 years he would score more than 200 goals in 408 appearances with the club. The most important of these was the crucial third Hearts goal against Celtic in the 1956 Scottish Cup Final, securing the trophy with a 3-1 win.He was also part of the League Championship-winning side of 1957/58, though injury kept him out for most of the season. The following year he moved to Raith Rovers where he played for two seasons before going into non-league management. He represented the Scottish national side once - in 1956.His son, Alfie Conn Jr, played for Rangers, Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur and also had a spell at Tynecastle. In 1998 Alfie Sr was quoted as saying, "When you have been a Hearts player the feeling never leaves you."Scottish international and successful manager Dave Mackay was among those to pay tribute to him saying: "Alfie was a legendary figure at Hearts. His record speaks for itself and the names of Conn, Bauld, Wardhaugh will forever be engrained in the club's history. His passing is yet more sad news after the recent deaths of John Cumming and George Miller."

Alfie was my Boss when we both worked for a paint company. He was a great boss and so much fun to work for . An era has ended and my condolences go to Betty and all his family.

I was a young lad who came fm slamannan nr falkirk, and was a jam tart supporter in the 50"s, i never got to see the great man but he was a hero and you new that if HEARTS had scored there was every chance it was alfie, this was on the wireless. Luckily enough i had the good fortune to come to TYNCASTLE as an apprentice in 1966, and the place was surrounded with Alfie Conns heroics for the jam tarts, they were great times and he was a legend and always will be, my thoughts go to his family as he was a hero of scottish football folklore.......keep banging them in big man
